Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to teach children about the importance of caring for our planet. By incorporating hands-on activities, kids can explore ways to reduce waste, appreciate nature, and understand the impact they have on the environment. Here are three simple activities that make learning about Earth Day fun and meaningful!

Teacher and students recycling

1. Recycle Sorting Challenge

Recycling is a great way to help the planet, and kids can learn how to sort materials with this engaging activity!

What You’ll Need:

  • Small household objects such as paper clips, empty cans, bottle caps, and paper scraps
  • Four labeled bins or areas: Paper, Plastic, Metal, and Garbage

Activity Steps:

  1. Gather a variety of recyclable and non-recyclable materials.
  2. Have your child sort the objects into the correct bins.
  3. Discuss why each item belongs in a specific category and how recycling helps reduce waste.

The more variety you provide, the more challenging (and fun!) the sorting process becomes!

2. Starter Pots for Planting

Get kids excited about gardening while teaching them about plant life cycles and compostable materials.

What You’ll Need:

  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Soil
  • Seeds (flowers, grass, or vegetables)
  • A tray or shallow pan
  • Water

Activity Steps:

  1. Stand the toilet paper rolls upright on a tray or shallow pan.
  2. Fill each roll about one-third full with soil.
  3. Add seeds (use several if planting grass) and cover with more soil until the roll is two-thirds full.
  4. Lightly water the soil each day—when the cardboard shows small wet spots, it’s hydrated enough.
  5. Once sprouts appear, plant the entire roll outdoors in a garden or a larger pot. The cardboard will naturally decompose, making this an eco-friendly way to start a garden!

3. Science Experiment: Making a Plastic-Like Material

Turn science into a hands-on Earth Day lesson by creating a biodegradable plastic-like substance using common household ingredients!

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 4 tablespoons vinegar
  • Strainer
  • Paper towels
  • Cookie cutters
  • Permanent markers (for decorating)

Activity Steps:

  1. Heat the milk in a microwave-safe bowl for 90 seconds.
  2. Stir in the vinegar and mix for 60 seconds.
  3. Pour the mixture into a strainer, pressing out excess liquid.
  4. Use a paper towel to absorb any remaining moisture.
  5. Place a cookie cutter on a clean paper towel and press the mixture into the shape.
  6. Let it dry for 48 hours before decorating with markers!
